Approve a branded highlighter against the handout it will mark—and the copy or scan that comes afterward. A bright stripe on a blank sheet does not tell a training coordinator whether printed text will smear, reverse-side exercises will remain readable or marked answers will survive a grayscale scan.
For adult-learning workshops, onboarding classes and professional-development sessions, make the document workflow the buying brief. Choose the ink color after you know what participants will do with the page.
Three jobs that need different approval checks
- Reading a printed workbook: prioritize readable text under the highlight and a clean reverse side. Use the actual workbook stock and printing method.
- Marking handwritten answers: check the highlighter with the pen supplied in the kit, at the pace participants will use it. A printout-only check does not cover this task.
- Copying or scanning marked pages: decide whether the highlight must remain visible in the output. Review that output, not just the original sheet.
These are separate acceptance decisions. A marker can suit a reading exercise without being the right choice for a facilitator who collects and scans annotated worksheets.
Read the claim for the exact ink, not the barrel
STAEDTLER’s Textsurfer classic 364 specifications distinguish inkjet compatibility from copy performance: the page describes resistance to smudging inkjet printouts and handwriting, while naming violet and turquoise for documents intended to be copied. That is a useful distinction—not a reason to assume every color has the same behavior in your copier.
The manufacturer’s promotional highlighter range also lists inkjet-safe language for its classic and rainbow versions, but does not include that claim in the pastel-and-vintage listing. An omitted claim does not prove that a version will smear. It means you should obtain the relevant specification or sample evidence instead of extending another version’s claim to it.
These manufacturer examples explain what to ask; they are not a verified Brand Sauce assortment or a promise of decorated availability. Exact model, ink color, destination-country supply, minimum quantity and delivered price remain quote-needed.
A one-sheet trial for your next workshop
Build a disposable approval sheet from the real session materials. The procedure below is a proposed practical check, not a standardized laboratory test or a test Brand Sauce has performed.
- Keep an unmarked reference. Print two copies using the same printer, settings and paper planned for the workshop. Include a paragraph, small type and a double-sided exercise if those appear in the workbook.
- Add the handwriting task. Write a short answer with the intended kit pen. Record how long it sits before highlighting; use the actual activity’s timing rather than giving every sample an unrealistic overnight drying period.
- Mark three separate areas. Highlight printed text, handwritten text and a second pass over an already highlighted line. Record the sample model and ink color beside each area. Do not use the decorated barrel color as the identifier.
- Read both sides. Compare with the unmarked sheet. Look for dragged text, an obscured answer, ink appearing through the sheet and any mark that interferes with the next exercise.
- Run the real output step. If the facilitator will photocopy or scan, use that device and its normal color or grayscale setting. Check that the text is readable and that any highlight you need to preserve is still distinguishable.
Keep each resulting sheet with this compact decision record:
Workshop highlighter decision
Document edition / paper / printer: ______
Marker model / ink color / kit pen: ______
Time between writing and highlighting: ______
Original page: readable / fails at ______
Reverse side: usable / fails at ______
Copy or scan setting: ______ / not required
Highlight must survive copying: yes / no
Output meets that requirement: yes / no / not applicable
Approved combination and reviewer: ______
Turn a failed check into a specific change
If handwriting smears but printed text stays clean, try a different pen-and-highlighter pairing; our pen selection guide covers the separate problem of smearing during normal writing. If the reverse side becomes difficult to use, reconsider the marker or paper with the notebook paper and binding guide. If only the scan fails, review ink color and capture settings before replacing an otherwise suitable workbook.
Illustrative decision: a facilitator needs participants’ highlighted passages visible in a grayscale archive. A sample that looks attractive on the original but loses those distinctions in the scan fails that requirement. The next candidate must pass the same scan—not merely look darker on the desk.
Freeze the approved document, pen, highlighter model and ink color together. A logo proof approves decoration; it does not approve a substituted ink. Recheck the relevant step if the supplier changes the marker or the training team changes the handout.
