Diamonds & Denim
That was the theme of the DaddyâDaughter dance at Maxieâs school.
When you walked in, there was a cowboy hatâmaking station where dads and daughters could design their own hats. A photo booth. A DJ. All the usual stuff.
But what stood out most wasnât any of that.
It was the looks on the dadsâ faces.
Pure happiness.
Thereâs something uniquely magical about seeing your daughter all dressed up. Watching her dance with her friends, smiling ear to ear. Knowing, for one night, the world is small, simple, and centered on you and your baby girl.
We donât get many moments like this.
At one point, I was dancing with Maxie and remembered bringing her to this same dance three years ago. Back then, she was the little kindergartener, surrounded by bigger kids. Now sheâs one of the older ones, confident, coordinated, with dance moves that make her seem so grown up.
And thatâs the thing, isnât it? Kids grow up fast.
Before we know it, these girls will be teenagers. Then theyâll be dancing with boys instead of their dads. And weâll be at home, hoping theyâre safe, missing nights exactly like this one.
I know moments like this are fleeting. So I did my best to soak it all in. Iâm incredibly proud of the girl Maxie is becoming. I donât know how many more daddyâdaughter dances weâll get, but I do know Iâll never take these moments for granted.
To all the girl dads out there: I know weâre in the same boat. Holding on for dear life. Trying to slow time down. Doing our best to enjoy every special moment weâre lucky enough to get.
Because they donât last forever. And they matter more than we realize while weâre in them.
I love you, Maxie. Thank you for giving me these special times.Â
