Follow-up Gifts

Issue 005

Every Wednesday at noon, the team at MerchLab gets together for lunch in their conference room. They discuss a challenge that one of the distributors is having. As a group, they come together to help solve the challenge.

avatar_max

Harold, did you watch the Vikings game on Monday night?

avatar_mary

Maybe Olivia and I watched the game, you know women watch football.

avatar_max

Sorry, did any of you watch that shitty game against the Packers?

avatar_olivia

I have Rodgers on my fantasy team, and he won me my week.

avatar_mary

See, Max.

avatar_olivia

I didn’t watch the game, but I saw the stats. We do girls’ night while the boys watch Monday night football.

avatar_harold

The Vikings are the same every year Max. About the 10th best team in the league. They always have talent and never have a solid o-line or d-line in the playoffs.

avatar_max

I hope my grandkids see them win a Super Bowl someday.

avatar_harold

How about play in a Super Bowl someday?

avatar_mary

Enough about the Vikings. Let’s talk about my meeting with Coherent Solutions. They have over 1,000 employees. We built their store a few years ago, and HR uses the store for talent acquisition, recruiting, and onboarding. Their events team uses the store for every event. They are a stable client.

avatar_olivia

What do they do?

avatar_mary

They are a software development company.

avatar_olivia

I am not sure what that means, but I am sure they are smart.

avatar_mary

My meeting with them went well. But now they want us to help them with their sales team. They asked me how our other clients use their automated e-commerce stores to boost sales. I told them I would meet with my team and think of some relevant use cases to share with them.

avatar_harold

When it comes to sales, it is all about the funnel. At what point in the funnel is it best to give out swag?

avatar_olivia

That depends on the company and the client. Is it B2B or B2C?

avatar_harold

I agree. It is case by case and depends on what the main goal is. I think too many companies are trying to accomplish too many things and don’t understand their funnel. It is obvious to say the goal is more sales, but that doesn’t help.

avatar_max

I am lost. Isn’t the goal to make the sale?

avatar_harold

Sometimes. The goal could be to drive traffic to a website or get somebody to give you their email.

avatar_mary

Or to get a meeting set up.

avatar_olivia

Or to get a follow-up meeting.

avatar_max

I see, so that is what you mean by a funnel. A lot of things need to happen before they pay you.

avatar_harold

It could also be after they have paid you. To get them to pay you again. Or to get them to refer a friend to your company. Mary, do you know at what point in the funnel they need help?

avatar_mary

I am not exactly sure, but it sounds like they were meeting with clients, and they thought the meetings went well, but then they were not getting them as clients.

avatar_max

Did you ask about their follow up plan after the meeting? A lot of salespeople work their ass off to get a meeting. Then they do well at the meeting. But they forget to follow up. Or they send an email a week later. Worse, they put that potential client on an email list that spams all prospective clients the same dumb email.

avatar_mary

I was like that early on. I was so focused on getting meetings that my follow up was awful. I was “on to the next” the following day. I had more meetings and current clients to deal with that my follow up was poor. What is ironic is I worked so hard to get the meeting you would think I would have worked even harder to close them as a client.

avatar_olivia

If this is the case for the salespeople at Coherent Solutions, then they should implement a standard follow up procedure for all salespeople after potential client meetings.

avatar_harold

They should use the meeting to learn more about the potential client. Do they have kids, what hobbies are they into, what is currently on their desk. Then after the meeting, they could go to the store and send them a gift.

avatar_mary

I like that idea. They could set a reminder that two weeks after they sent the gift, they follow up with a phone call to see if the potential client received the gift. Two weeks gives the potential client time to reach out to the Coherent Solutions salesperson and say thank you. It also gives them time to talk to their team and report and feedback from the meeting.

avatar_olivia

They could be interested in Coherent Solutions services after the initial meeting but need to talk to the boss about the budget, or maybe they still have other competitors to vet. The follow-up phone call will let Coherent Solutions salespeople know where they stand.

avatar_max

I wouldn’t count on people thanking the Coherent Solutions people for their gift. People today have no understanding of civics. When somebody sends you a gift, you say thank you. I have been in this business for 40 years, and I am shocked when people do say thank you.

avatar_mary

Thank you, this is excellent information. It should be simple for them to create a budget for a follow-up gift.

avatar_harold

They can A/B test it. Send gifts to 100 potential customers and not send gifts to another 100 and see what the results are. Then they will know if the money is well spent.

avatar_mary

Thank you! I love all of you.

High School Spirit Store

Issue 004

Every Wednesday at noon, the team at MerchLab gets together for lunch in their conference room. They discuss a challenge that one of the distributors is having. As a group, they come together to help solve the challenge.

avatar_mary

Max, was that your grandson that was in here yesterday?

avatar_olivia

Yes, Blake is in 10th grade now. I can’t believe how tall he is.

avatar_max

Blake and I went to get lunch to catch up. He loves coming into the office to see the products we have. Harold showed Blake the new stuff from Origaudio.

avatar_harold

Max, I told Blake we could put any logo he wants on the speakers, backpacks, and chargers. Blake said he wants a bunch of products decorated with his high school logo. He wants to use them on the bus when they travel for hockey games.

avatar_max

Harold, you told him I would buy him all of that?

avatar_harold

I am sure Origaudio will give you a good deal. I will get the art from Blake and create some cool virtuals.

avatar_olivia

When Blake’s friends at school see his new swag they are going to be jealous.

avatar_mary

We can set up an automated e-commerce store for his school.

avatar_max

I am sure his school has a store. All high schools have e-commerce stores.

avatar_harold

I did some digging into high school e-commerce sites last year for my cousin. He is a high school basketball coach, and he asked me to help with uniforms. Most high school teams do their own thing. At the same high school, the basketball team will order uniforms from a different company than the football team. The tennis team will order from a different company than the swim team.

avatar_mary

We don’t want to be in the uniform business. We want to be in the spirit store business. Let the coaches source their own uniforms. We will build an e-commerce store for the whole school.

avatar_olivia

High school kids and their parents will love our products.

avatar_mary

The parents will love the tents, chairs, and umbrellas for the outdoor sports.

avatar_harold

The students will love the speakers, chargers, popsockets, and backpacks.

avatar_olivia

I want to design the crop top hoodies from Independent. The girls will love them.

avatar_harold

I will get Blake some products to show his friends. The students can speak to the school about updating their spirit store.

avatar_olivia

We can let the kids design products for the store. Kids today are wizards with Illustrator.

avatar_mary

That would be great. The students will love that.

avatar_harold

When I researched high school uniforms, I learned that schools use their spirit stores as a fundraising tool.

avatar_max

I would love to help high schools raise thousands of dollars. Hopefully, they use the money to pay their teachers more money. Teachers are underpaid and underappreciated.

avatar_olivia

When we are done here, I am going to reach out to my high school and offer them a spirit store. I love how we can use our stores for so many reasons.

Event Sponsorship

Issue 003

Every Wednesday at noon, the team at MerchLab gets together for lunch in their conference room. They discuss a challenge that one of the distributors is having. As a group, they come together to help solve the challenge.

avatar_max

Harold, are you okay? You are limping.

avatar_harold

I am fine. I ran in Grandma’s Marathon, and I am still recovering.

avatar_mary

We are very proud of you, Harold. That is a fantastic accomplishment.

avatar_max

Just thinking about all of the running is making me hungry. Let’s nosh.

avatar_mary

What are we discussing today?

avatar_olivia

I need help. I spoke with my friends at Backline yesterday. They want me to help with their title sponsor for their upcoming concert at First Avenue.

avatar_max

Who is Backline?

avatar_olivia

They offer mental health services to the music industry. My friend Zack helped start the organization, and they do fantastic work.

avatar_max

That industry needs all the mental health they can get. Way too many musicians die young.

avatar_olivia

They are looking for a title sponsor, and they want to offer them something unique besides the usual put their name on emails, signs, and t-shirts.

avatar_harold

UGC is the most important thing right now. I would try and get the people attending the event some gifts with the sponsor’s name and reward them for creating content.

avatar_mary

I can reach out to my contact at KIND. Their foundation has been looking at mental health initiatives.

avatar_harold

Is that KIND bars? I love their fruit bars.

avatar_mary

I have an idea. What about offering all of the people who buy a ticket a free gift with KIND on the merchandise. Give the people six options of gifts to choose from. They can choose if they want a t-shirt, hat, bottle, backpack..etc. You can’t just slap KIND on a t-shirt because more people won’t want it or wear it to the show. You have to give people options.

avatar_harold

KIND could follow up with people who received their gift and ask them to take a picture wearing or holding their gift and then do a post on social media.

avatar_olivia

I like that. Take a picture of your gift. Name the band you are most excited to see. Tag Backline and KIND in the post.

avatar_harold

KIND would get a ton of UGC. They can reward each person who posts a photo with a box of KIND bars for participating.

avatar_mary

Once KIND gets a customer a free box of products, the LTV of that client is huge. People love their products.

avatar_harold

Hundreds of social media posts showing that KIND is helping the music industry with mental health is excellent for their brand.

avatar_olivia

Mary, do think you can talk to your contact at KIND about this?

avatar_max

My client at General Mills might like this concept as well.

avatar_mary

Max, you speak to your contact at General Mills, and I will talk to my contact at KIND. We will find a title sponsor for this event.

avatar_olivia

Thank you so much for your help.

Rewarding New Clients = Brand Awareness

Issue 002

Every Wednesday at noon, the team at MerchLab gets together for lunch in their conference room. They discuss a challenge that one of the distributors is having. As a group, they come together to help solve the challenge.

avatar_max

The food smells good. I am starving.

avatar_olivia

Max, they forgot to add your side of Russian dressing.

avatar_max

I have some extra saved in the refrigerator for emergencies like this.

avatar_harold

Max is always prepared.

avatar_mary

Max, I ran into your friend Lyle Berman on Saturday during halftime of the Timberwolves game.

avatar_max

How is Lyle doing? Is he doing Esports now?

avatar_mary

He is involved in so many businesses I can’t keep up. He said the team at Drake’s was raving about the new POS signs we did.

avatar_harold

Are those the 3D signs we did with Stackawrap?

avatar_max

That is great. Lyle can send us a lot of business.

avatar_mary

He was at the game with a gentleman named Greg from Rush Street Gaming. Lyle knows Greg from all of the casino business he does. Lyle introduced me as the queen of merchandise and told Greg that we should talk.

avatar_olivia

You are the queen of merch.

avatar_mary

Greg and I talked for a few minutes and exchanged cards. He said they could use some help in Indiana where they are trying to grow their sportsbook business. Draftkings and Fanduel are kicking their ass.

avatar_olivia

If you live in Indiana, you can bet on sports through their app? Harold: Yup, a few states allow sports betting without going into a casino. Minnesota does not, but it is coming soon.

avatar_max

Soon, we can live bet while we are in the stadium at Vikings games. That is going to be wild.

avatar_mary

I need to come up with some good ideas for Greg to help them get their name out in Indiana with more sports betters.

avatar_max

I am sure they give free bets and other gambling perks for the players that bet the most, but that doesn’t help them grow their brand. These casinos don’t understand marketing; they only understand loyalty.

avatar_olivia

Casinos give you free money to gamble, complimentary rooms, tickets to shows, and all sorts of other perks if you bet with them. Is that what you mean by loyalty?

avatar_max

All of that keeps the person playing happy. Those rewards don’t help market their brand and drive more people to gamble with them.

avatar_mary

Max has a good point. If a guy walks into his country club wearing a BetRivers Cutter & Buck golf vest, people will ask about it. That allows the person to explain that BetRivers is where they do their online gambling. Most likely, the other guys at the country club will use BetRivers if their friend says it is a solid app.

avatar_max

Casino’s are always going to do their loyalty to get their players to bet more. They should also be using their players to help spread the word about their brand.

avatar_harold

I play fantasy football on DraftKings because that is where my friends play.

avatar_olivia

It sounds like BetRivers needs to learn the art of surprise and delight. It is shocking how many companies don’t understand the power of a free gift to their most loyal customers.

avatar_max

When we have our NFL clients facetime a few of their top fans, the fans go crazy. It is guaranteed they tell their friends and they buy more merch. Surprise and delight.

avatar_mary

That is true, Olivia. BetRivers knows who their loyal customers are. They should send those people free money to an automated e-commerce store.

avatar_olivia

They can come up with some unique “BR” logo designs to keep the logo small and indiscreet. That will make people ask what BR is, and it will force the person to tell their story.

avatar_max

Greg will understand this is a marketing program. They are using their most loyal customers as walking billboards and keeping their loyal customers happy.

avatar_harold

Maybe if you use the term micro-influencers, they will understand it better. There are not better micro-influencers for a brand than somebody who uses the product all of the time.

avatar_olivia

Imagine guys showing up to Crooked Stick for a round of golf with BR on their golf balls, hat, polo, vest, and Bluetooth speaker/charger.

avatar_harold

I don’t think they let people bump music in the golf cart at Crooked Stick.

avatar_mary

Thanks, team. I will put together a marketing plan for Greg. I am sure he will see the value in having their loyal customers as micro-influencers for their brand.

College Swag Stores

Issue 001

Every Wednesday at noon, the team at MerchLab gets together for lunch in their conference room. They discuss a challenge that one of the distributors is having. As a group, they come together to help solve the challenge.

avatar_mary

Harold and Olivia did you take classes online in undergrad?

avatar_harold

My school had classes that you could go to live but were also recorded if you wanted to watch them online.

avatar_olivia

We didn’t have online classes but I know that the future is online education. My cousin is a nationally ranked golfer and she goes to online school so she can travel for golf.

avatar_mary

I met with Walden University last week. Have you heard of it?

avatar_max

My cousin got her masters degree from Walden. I couldn’t believe you could get a masters degree online but she said the education was very good. Her company paid half of the tuition.

avatar_mary

It is pretty amazing the classes they offer. They have students from all over the world.

avatar_harold

Do they send swag to all of their new students? They can’t have a campus bookstore if it is all online.

avatar_mary

I met with Viviana who is in charge of their merchandise and she is overwhelmed. They don’t have an online store. She literally gets calls and emails all day from people who need merchandise. Her job has turned into ordering swag. She can get an email from the president of the school who needs gifts for investors and then get an email from admissions who wants to send out swag to alumni in Canada.

avatar_harold

I wonder how many people are out there that take brand merch orders all day from people at their company. What is that job title?

avatar_olivia

I bet most companies have people that do this as part of their job. People in sales, marketing, HR and events need a main person in headquarters to contact when they need swag. If the company is big enough they could be getting calls and emails all day.

avatar_max

I can’t imagine how a person or team can keep track all of the orders and then deal with the follow up and tracking.

avatar_olivia

The worst is when people ask for swag and then three days later email and call for tracking. Then Fedex or UPS mess up on shipping and the person who ordered 3 t-shirts is freaking out.

avatar_mary

Viviana has closet stock to ship out. She has to review all of the decks with her distributor, approve all of the proofs and send out tracking to all of the different people that ask her to place orders.

avatar_harold

What did she say when you showed her the sites we have built?

avatar_mary

I thought she was going to cry. She needs a store with pens, mouse pads, backpacks and other products related to school. As well as all of the apparel options college students like. Her school has students that are 18 and 45 so she needs a wide variety of options.

avatar_olivia

We can build her an amazing site with all of the products she needs.

avatar_mary

I explained that she doesn’t have to do the orders anymore. She can send people to the site so they can order them self. They can use department codes if the school is paying for the products. I also showed her how they can give new students, graduating students and alumni gift cards to the store.

avatar_harold

Now she can just pick out products and add products that people are requesting.

avatar_mary

At the end she made a funny comment about how the store is so good it might put her out of job.

avatar_olivia

Somebody still needs to manage the store for the school but now she will enjoy her job and hopefully do other things for the school besides take orders and send tracking emails.
